The Vermont Country Store
The Vermont Country Store is a Vermont landmark known for its wide array of merchandise, nostalgic items and old fashion candy. Founded in 1946 by Vrest and Ellen Orton, The Vermont Country Store began as a catalogue business featuring thirty-six items for sale. This 12-page, black and white catalogue was sent to people on the Orton's Christmas list. Orders came flooding in and the rest as the say is history!
With fond memories of his families own general store, Vrest Orton opened the first Vermont Country Store in Weston, Vermont in 1946 to help support his burgeoning catalogue business. With business booming, the store began gaining national attention and was featured a 1952 Saturday Evening Post article which was read by several million readers.
Today The Vermont Country Store is still owned by the Orton family. Vrest's son Lyman and his three sons are carrying on the family tradition. With two store locations in Weston and Rockingham, The Vermont Country Store continues to grow both its catalogue business as well as its retail store fronts. While times have changed The Vermont Country Store's dedication to the State of Vermont and its customers has not.
